Basic Training Tips

· Happy Tails Team

Reward-based training is the gold standard. Start with the four core commands: sit, stay, come, and leave it. Keep sessions to 5–10 minutes so your dog stays engaged.

Use high-value treats for new skills and phase them out once the behaviour is solid. For older rescues, patience is everything — they can absolutely learn new tricks.

The key is to never punish mistakes; simply withhold the reward and try again. End every session on a win, even if it means asking for something easy like 'sit'. Consistency between all household members is crucial — everyone needs to use the same cues and rules.
