Dental Health for Pets

· Happy Tails Team

Dental disease is the most underdiagnosed condition in dogs and cats, yet it affects over 80% of pets by age three. Left untreated, it leads to pain, tooth loss, and bacteria that can spread to the heart and kidneys.

The gold standard is daily brushing with a pet-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste — xylitol is toxic to pets). Start slowly: let your pet lick the toothpaste, then introduce a finger brush, then a full toothbrush over a period of weeks.

Dental chews, water additives, and veterinary dental diets provide supplemental help but don't replace brushing. Book a professional dental clean with your vet annually, or whenever you notice bad breath, yellow tartar, or reluctance to chew.
