Not all pet food is equal. Look for a named protein source (e.g. 'chicken', not 'poultry by-product') as the first ingredient. Life-stage matters — puppy and kitten formulas differ significantly from adult versions.
For cats especially, wet food supports hydration. When in doubt, ask your vet for a brand recommendation tailored to your pet's size and health status.
Feed measured portions at consistent times rather than free-feeding, which can lead to obesity. Keep an eye on body condition: you should be able to feel (but not see) your pet's ribs. Weight gain or loss is often the first visible sign that something needs adjusting.
