Socialising Your New Pet

· Happy Tails Team

Socialisation is one of the most powerful things you can do for a new pet — and the earlier, the better. For dogs, gradual exposure to other dogs, different people, traffic, and new environments builds confidence and reduces fear-based reactions later in life.

Always pair new experiences with something positive: a treat, praise, or play. Never force interaction; let your pet set the pace.

For cats, slow introductions using scent-swapping before any face-to-face meeting dramatically increase success rates. Keep initial meetings short and always give each animal a safe retreat. A well-socialised pet is calmer, friendlier, and far easier to live with long-term.
